High Veined Encrusting Sponge- Spirastrella hartmani-1-30-2021-71 2.jpg

This brightly colored green sponge may look attractive, but it is lethal to coral. Encrusting sponges attack and erode the surface of living coral. These colonies of sponges kill the living tissue of th coral, excavate the upper layers of the coral skeleton. These sponges secrete acid that dissolves and chips away at the coral skeletons. Location: Klein Island, Bonaire part of the Caribbean Netherlands and part of the Leeward Antilles, January 2021.
